I'm distressed this morning.

In fact, I woke up before 6am thinking about it.

My 7th and 8th graders don't get it.

They don't know that they are responsible.

For the people in need--the poor, the sick, the ignored.

For each other.

To not just tell people about Jesus.

But to live like him.

It's my JOB to help them understand.

I might be failing.

God help me.

Am I my brother's keeper?

Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!

But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.

Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

Loving one another. Taking care of each other. It runs contrary to every impulse of our sinful nature. We want to take. We want to hoard. We want to own and control and manipulate. We want "God, you, all friends merely to serve (our) turn."

But there is another way. A way that knows that it is only by great strength that one can bend a weakened knee and help another rise up. One that knows it is only by great courage that one might comfort those who live in fear. One that knows that it is only in giving that we truly find ourselves filled. The Lord gives only into empty hands.

And there is a truth that goes deeper than the surface of our world. A deeper magic, if you will, that reminds us of a simple truth:

Love wins.

Love wins...but not in the way you'd expect.

Be encouraged, dear sister. It is not you who teach, but Christ.
