now reading: a google document

About two months ago, I decided I didn't have enough lists in my life and I created a document of books that I'd read this year, books I am currently reading, books I want to read, and books that I want to buy so that I will guilt myself into reading them.

Here's what it looks like today, though I am not entirely sure that the finished reads list is comprehensive. I think I've forgotten a few trashy forgettables. What should I add?

I'm happy to see that you picked up Cuisines of the Axis of Evil too. I enjoyed that book even though I didn't cook from it.

Also glad to see Bird by Bird on the To Pick Up list. I need to get that book in my collection as well.

I don't know if it would help you as much as it is helping me, but I'm currently a HUGE fan of "Refuse to Choose" by Barbara Sher. If you're not a scanner, you're at least someone with divergent interests who might enjoy the tools she recommends.

Bird by Bird is definitely worth reading.

What did you think of The Book Thief? I've heard others talking about it but haven't decided if I want to read it.

I think you need more fiction on your list. (But that's because that's mostly all I read!) Have you ever read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card? I recently discovered it and haven't been able to get it out of my head. Entertaining story, and very thought-provoking. I highly recommend it!

fiction is hard for me. I have trouble getting good recommendations. I am basically a snob about what I like: contemporary american lit. :) the book theif, the one exception to that rule i've made lately, was entertaining in an adolescent lit kind of way. it is well written and an engaging way for young people to see a different side of the holocaust. as for a book to read to enjoy for nothing but just to enjoy, i think it depends on the person.
i'm excited about bird by bird. i hope i'll get to it soon.

as for blogging... we'll see how long I last at it. :)

I understand about recommendations. I'm a bit of a book snob myself. :) I did my thesis on contemporary American women writers. Check out Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson. I think it's perfect. And A History of Love by Nicole Kraus is also great. They're the only two contemporary novels that make it into my top 5 books of all time list.
